After watching the simultaneous declines of its market value and funded status during the financial crisis, the $204.8 billion CalPERS will conduct a full review of the methodologies underpinning its asset liability management (ALM) process.

CalPERS’ investment office is working on a variety of environmental programs and initiatives. Amanda White looks at the environmental goals and achievements of the fund across real estate, global equities and alternative investments and examines the plans to develop total fund strategies to improve environmental impact and enhance risk adjusted returns.

Risk to reputation is more important than risk to investments according to a survey of internal staff at CalPERS completed as part of its governance/risk management initiative.

CalPERS is expecting to deploy the $22 billion in unfunded commitments of its alternatives investment management program in the next two to three years, with greater concentration among the best performing managers one of the priorities for 2010.
